A lot of modern cannabis strains have a pretty clear family history. Thanks to the hard work of breeders, we can trace these hybrids back to their landrace roots and the places they originally came from. But Chemdawg Genetic is a bit of an exception to that.

Here’s what we do know. The first documented Chemdawg Genetic plant was grown by a guy who got the seed from a bag of Northern California weed he picked up at a Grateful Dead concert in Colorado back in 1991. The grower, known as Chemdog, says that the strain was originally called “Chem” or “Dog Bud,” and those names eventually merged into what we now know as Chemdawg. From there, the genetics spread to growers all over the U.S. and eventually overseas.

What Strains Make Up Chemdawg Genetic Routs?

The story of Chemdawg’s lineage pretty much ends with that bag of California weed. But that hasn’t stopped growers from guessing where it might have come from. Some think it was created by crossing Thai and Nepalese sativa landraces. While that’s just a theory, it makes sense when you look at Chemdawg’s tall colas and its energetic high, both of which scream sativa. Plus, its earthy, musky, and slightly gassy smell is similar to what you’d expect from those potential parent strains.

Figuring out It’s exact parentage could help modern breeders recreate something like it, but here’s the good news: we all have access to this strain now! It used to only be available as a cutting, but now you can easily find seeds of this strain.
